Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience

Informational signage for the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience

Design + print production · Cañon City, CO

The Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience was a dinosaur museum and outdoor park located at the Royal Gorge in Cañon City, Colorado. Their Wild Walk area featured 16 life-sized, animatronic dinosaurs — some towering over 30 feet tall — set along a winding trail through a high-plains desert landscape. Pretty cool place. Our job was to make sure visitors actually knew what they were looking at.

Each dinosaur needed its own interpretive sign — and these weren't simple name plates. Each 36" × 27" sign had to pack in a serious amount of information while still feeling approachable and fun for visitors of all ages, including things like fossil discovery locations, a world habitat map, diet and body details, and a size comparison scale across all 16 dinosaurs in the park.

The Approach

The design had to do a lot of heavy lifting — organizing dense, varied content into a layout that felt clear and intuitive at a glance, not overwhelming. The signs also needed to hold up in an outdoor, natural environment, placed right next to the life-sized exhibits. From design through to coordinating print and production, the goal was signage that felt like a natural part of the experience — not an afterthought bolted to a post.

Visitors walking the Wild Walk had everything they needed to connect with each dinosaur — no guessing, no wandering past a 25-foot T. rex wondering what era it's from. The signs gave context, sparked curiosity, and made the whole experience more engaging. The client was happy, and honestly, so were the dinosaurs.

Unfortunately, the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience closed its doors on December 31, 2025.
